WaterScout SM100 Soil Moisture Sensor
Measuring soil moisture is becoming significantly more important in current times, where droughts have become more present. Improving irrigation management is key to keep watering cost down and irrigate more responsibly according to the plant;s needs. The WaterScout SM100 soil moisture sensor helps you with determining the moisture levels by placing it in the root zones of the plants and connected to soil moisture stations or meters.
You can choose from a SM100 sensor with 1,8 meter cable or one with 6 meter cable.
Volumetric Water Content
The sensor measures the volumetric water content of the soil it is placed in. This means it measures the percentage of water of and contained by the soil. In other words it measures the amount of water the soil is capable to hold at a specific moment.
The maximum amount of water a soil type can hold after saturation and drainage very shortly afteris also called the
Field Capacity of the soil.
Each soil type has its own Field Capacity. A clay soil for instance has a higher capacity than sandy soil. In the diagram below you can see the field capacity of different soil types
Meters and Stations
The sensors can be connected to all WatchDog 1000 and 2000 series stations and loggers and the FieldScout Soil Sensor Reader as well. This sensor is also suitable to connetc to your own devices and meters with some modification. The sensor has the following characteristics:
- Measures VWC %
- Capacitance-type sensor responds immediately to changes in soil moisture content for better irrigation decisions
- Calibrated for mineral soils or soilless media
- Install permanently or use to take spot measurements
